TIBERIAS
It is a city on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, founded in AD 18 by Herod Antipas (the Herod of Jesus’ time). He named it for his patron, Caesar Tiberias (emperor from 14-37 AD). It is mentioned only once in the Gospels (John 6:23).
Tiberias was a pagan city during the days of Jesus, but there were seven synagogues there about 150. The Palestinian Talmud, which includes the Mishnah (the oral tradition and commentary on the Old Testament) and the Germara ( a commentary on the commentary) emanated from Tiberias at the end of the fourth century.
